Just Say YES!
Our current housing crisis is a complex problem with many causes. There is no single approach that will fix everything. Housing Medford advocates for various strategies to address housing needs.
- We are facing a severe housing shortage statewide and beyond. Housing Medford supports policies and initiatives that will create new housing units.
- Home prices and rents are increasingly out of reach. Housing Medford supports developing new sources of funding that will enable us to make more housing affordable.
- Renters, in particular, face displacement from their homes due to the runaway market. Housing Medford supports consumer protections that will help stabilize housing for renters and support resident property owners.
What is affordable housing?
Housing is considered to be affordable if it costs less than 30% of a household’s income. There are many kinds of programs and resources to help renters and homeowners access housing that they can afford. These may help people at different income levels or with different kinds of housing needs. This page provides a range of income and affordability levels for different affordable housing programs.
Our Positions
Real Estate Transfer Fee:
Housing Medford supports a real estate transfer fee as a critical tool to raise the funds necessary to provide housing for our community. This fee represents an important step along the path to housing abundance, lower housing prices, and a stronger, healthier, more vibrant, and inclusive Medford.
Housing Medford strongly urges that any exemptions to the fee should be for the purpose of either protecting lower-income or otherwise vulnerable residents, or encouraging the production of new multifamily housing, as this type of housing is sorely needed in Medford.
We urge everyone in Medford to see beyond the misinformation surrounding this issue, envision a truly welcoming Medford, and remember that to solve our housing crisis, we must work together and use every tool at our disposal.
